Horse Fire Burning in Horse Creek, North of Chimney Rock

News Release

The Horse Fire is Burning in Horse Creek,  North of Chimney Rock in Rugged Terrain

Pagosa Springs, Colorado –

The Horse Fire is a lightning started fire, burning in the Horse Creek drainage, approximately 8 miles north of Highway 160 and Chimney Rock.   The 25 acre fire is burning in dense standing dead aspen and in steep terrain.  Currently a type one helicopter is attacking the fire with bucket drops.  Approximately 60 fire fighters, including a hot shot crew and an initial attack crew are on scene and additional resources are being ordered.  


Smoke from the fire will be visible from Yellow Jacket Pass, Hesperus Hill and Pagosa Springs.   The fire was discovered Tuesday at 1 pm.  Visitors to the First Fork and Devil Mountain area should check with the District office to check conditions.  No structures or private land is currently threatened.
