Durango, Colorado – September 9, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  The small lightning-caused fire located three miles southwest of Henderson Lake in the Bear Creek drainage on Missionary Ridge is at 1.25 acres. The area received light rain today, which moderated burning conditions, with minimal fire activity noted by the crew onsite.  Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire in the coming days.  Smoke may still be visible from US Highway 550 and the Missionary Ridge Road (Forest Road 682).  No closures or impacts to public use are anticipated.

News Release

Fire Crews Monitoring Small Lightning-caused Fire on Missionary Ridge

<Photo Attached>

Durango, Colorado – September 8, 2017 – 12:15 p.m.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  Firefighters are on scene and monitoring a remote lightning-caused wildfire three miles southwest of Henderson Lake in the Bear Creek drainage on Missionary Ridge.

“The fire is smoldering and creeping within a previously unburned area north of the Missionary Ridge burn scar,” said Chris Tipton, Columbine District Fire Management Officer.

Thunderstorms are tracking toward the area of the fire, which has a moderate to high potential to receive rain over the weekend.

“We don’t expect it to spread more than two or three acres, due to numerous natural barriers, already moist fuel conditions, and a potentially wet weather forecast,” Tipton said.

Smoke is visible from the U.S. Highway 550 corridor.  No closures or impacts to public use are anticipated.
